Wondering About The Benefits Of Omega 3 Fish Oils?

Thursday, August 20, 2009 by Guest Author

You’re not quite ready to believe the hype about the benefits of Omega 3 fish oils yet are you?

Most of us have heard that Omega 3 fats are good for our health, and that we all should be taking fish oil supplements. But are the benefits proven, and what are all the benefits of fish oils anyway? Should you be taking Omega 3 capsules or should you just eat more fish?

Good questions. Are the benefits proven? Are there really benefits from taking Omega 3 supplements? Is taking fish oil supplements “alternative” or is it accepted by mainstream medicine. Lets see.

The simple answer is this. The AHA (American Heart Association) tell us that we should be taking more Omega 3 fatty acids into our diets and recommends a minimum amount of fish to eat each week. Now the AHA is no alternative organization, it’s pretty mainstream and if they tell me that Omega 3 fats are good for my heart I’ll believe them.

So lets look at what more fish oil full of good fats like DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) does for your health. Note that there are varying degrees of “proven” and there will always be experts on both sides of the argument. I still know a doctor who maintains that high cholesterol isn’t bad for you.

1. Cardio vascular health.

A decrease in bad cholesterol. An increase in good cholesterol. A reduction in blood pressure. A reduced risk of stroke. Those are the big heart health benefits of Omega 3 fats.

2. Reduction in risks of aging related problems

There’s a range of reductions in the health risks of aging including a decrease in the risk of macular degeneration with age, the number one cause of blindness in the over 65s A decrease in the risk of Alzheimers with aging A decrease in the risk of dementia with aging

A reduction in the risks associated with Diabetes Diabetes sufferers have an up to 6 times increased risk of death due to heart attack. As fish oil benefits the heart and reduces the risk of heart attacks this is excellent news for diabetes sufferers.

3. Skin improvements.

Your skin has it’s own natural oils and environmental conditions can strip them out. Wind, sun and pollution can all remove your skins protective oils, and the good polyunsaturated oils of Omega 3 fish oils help replace those natural oils. Combine a high intake of Omega 3 with high quality skin care and your skin will thank you for it.

4. Improvements in Arthritis

Arthritis is a condition characterized by inflammation of the joints, so we need some good anti inflammatories. Aspirin has been used but over time is bad for the stomach. Fish oils are natural anti inflammatories, and are more effective as anti inflammatories than Aspirin. And they’re good for you generally.

5. An increase in the effectiveness of weight loss programs

Studies have shown that if we combine Omega 3 supplements with exercise in a weight loss program we will lose more weight than if we do the same exercise but without the fish oils. It’s thought the reason is that the polyunsaturated fats increase the ability of enzymes to burn fat.

Have I convinced you of the benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids yet? If not I don’t know what else to tell you.

Fish is the biggest source of DHA and EPA that we know of, so why not just eat stacks of fish? Because fish is contaminated with various toxins and the FDA tells us not to eat too much.

So you do need to be taking your supplements, but you also need to know which ones to avoid, and which ones to buy. I have written much more about choosing the best Omega 3 supplements, find a link below to read a more extensive review of choosing your fish oil capsules.

And I write more extensively on my website about the benefits of Omega 3 fish oils too.

I hope you’re sufficiently convinced about the benefits of Omega-3 fats. Start taking your fish oil capsules, you’ll do your health a power of good.
