Friday, 11. September 2009

The power of Alkaline Water! Texas State University is about to release results of a study that could mean a new way to fight cancer. Don’t run out and buy alkaline water yet, this testing was done in vitrio and with alka-v6/alkav6 only.

News 8’s Todd Boatwright has more on the two Texas State researchers’ findings.
The news comes as the number of breast cancer patients in Central Texas alone is expected to reach 900 this year.

Dr. Dhiraj Vattem, a professor in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, and Texas State Department of Agriculture Chair Dr. Reed Richardson co-investigated the new compound.

“We have a product we’ve been testing in the laboratory. All we’ve done so far is in vitro testing, which is artificial settings outside the organism,” Dr. Richardson said. “It is a compound that looks very effective in changing some of the metabolic pathways that are responsible for the cancer to either attach or grow.”

Dr. Richardson said that with the particular compound (alkav6) they have been testing, results were very consistent.

“It’s a silicon-based compound, and we use this at different levels to test these different systems, within cancer cells, as well as the HIV virus,” Dr. Richardson said. “We got real promise and results from that.”

Texas State researchers and Orizon Research Institute will present their current findings in a press conference at 2 p.m. Wednesday on the second floor of the Agricultural Building on the Texas State Campus.

For cancer, in vitro tests, the compound (alkav6) prevented cancerous cells from attaching to other cells, which slows down cancerous cells’ growth rate, Dr. Richardson said. The compound also reduced harmful mutations in the DNA and increased the likelihood of apoptosis, or programmed cell death. Finally the compound stimulated anti-oxidant enzymes responsible for some of the metabolic pathways.

“We measured a lot of different things in vitro, but they all got nice responses from the standpoint of pointing us toward a direction for a mode of action on this product,” he said. “It’s very important to say, that second phase, where we go in vivo, inside organisms within organisms’ systems, is the definitive step.”

The data from the in vivo studies is expected to be published later this year.

8 Simple Reasons We Should All Be Making Our Own Ice Cream

Thursday, 13. August 2009

People are always asking me why I make my own ice cream (I have done so for years and have a neighbourhood reputation for it lol). So in short and very simply, this is why I never buy ice cream any more and why I am always telling people to stop buying and start making.

1. My family and I love ice cream. We eat a lot of it all year round not just in summer. On a regular basis I found buying ice cream adds up, and on a monthly grocery bill, well lets just say I got a real shock. When I make my own, I make it a lot cheaper (but just as tasty, even tastier) than store bought. So I save on my food bill.

2. Having kids I am now more conscious of being ‘green’ and kinder to the planet. Making my own ice cream, is one way I can decrease my food miles. And instead of paying for ice cream to travel halfway around the country to me, everything I use for it I get on my own doorstep.

3. I get to know exactly what is going into my kids mouths. There are no additives or preservative in my home made dessert. Only natural goodness no artificial rubbish.

4. Allergies are not a problem. More and more friends and family these days seem to suffer from some sort of allergy or another. Well I can usually just leave out what they are allergic to, and replace it with something else.

5. It comes in really handy when invited out to dinner or to a barbecue, instead of wasting money on flowers etc, I bring along the dessert, yes my home made ice cream.

6. Getting the kids involved is a great way of involving them in what they eat. It sparks an interest in how things are made, not to mention it can keep them and their pals quite on a wet afternoon.

7. I can get the kids to eat more fruit too, by serving it on top or beside the ice cream. Add some good nuts, and maybe some oats sometimes and they don’t even know they are eating something really good for them. Result!

8. I always make my ice cream with lower fat cream or half and half. Honestly they don’t notice the difference. It’s so much less calorific than store bought.

There it is. My ice cream tastes great. Looks wonderful and costs less. I hope you start making yours too. It really is so much more rewarding than buying it.

The Hidden Dangers of Belly Fat

Wednesday, 12. August 2009

Everywhere you look these days you’re being told that you need to lose weight and get flat abs. If you’re watching TV, you see infomercials that tell you about some new diet pill that you have to have. If you’re looking through a magazine, you’ll see ads throughout. Cruise the internet for a minute and you’re likely to see some new product that claims to be the quick fix solution you’ve been looking for in your journey to get rid of fat.

It can be frustrating and make you feel older than you are. While the aesthetic reasons are enough to make you want to get rid of it and get flat abs and stomach, you should know that there are more important reasons to shed the fat. Belly fat is actually a lot more dangerous than other types of fat and it should be lost at all costs. Why is belly fat so dangerous and what can be done to get rid of it? Let’s look at the details.

People watch the news in anticipation of the next health scare that they can be worried about. We have a scare with the “Swine Flu” in the United States. Everyone was glued to their TV sets for a week, worrying about how many people were going to die from the “pandemic”. However, what they don’t realize is that there is something much more likely to kill them in their house already…their belly fat.

So why should you be concerned about belly fat, besides looking better? The short answer is…your health. That’s right, your health is a huge factor. While you know being overweight is unhealthy as a general rule, do you know why belly fat in particular is terrible for you? It affects your body negatively in a number of ways. Let’s look at the different ways that it affects your body.

Collecting extra fat around the midsection in turn makes you collect more fat in the liver. When you do this, it becomes exceedingly difficult for the liver to do its job. It can’t properly remove the insulin from your blood. This, in turn, makes your pancreas work overtime to produce more and more insulin.

As a result of this, you become insulin resistant. The last thing you want to be is resistant to insulin or anything else that your body produces naturally. This creates a substance in your body that is basically a poison and eats away at your inner organs. In a roundabout way it also makes you eat more. This will obviously make you gain even more belly fat.

Why is belly fat so dangerous exactly? It can cause you to be insulin resistant for one. This leads to your pancreas being overworked and your body creates a poison that slowly erodes the inside of your body. This is not a way that you want to finish your life.

Decide today that you want to lose the belly fat that plagues your health and your self-image. Get the information that you need in order to lose it and get busy. It’s not an easy journey, but once you make it through, you’ll be very glad that you did.

Yeast Infections: Symptoms and Diagnosis

Tuesday, 11. August 2009

Vaginal yeast infection and vulvitis cause symptoms that are nonspecific, which means that aside from the yeast infection, other conditions can cause the identical symptoms. The most common symptom of a vaginal yeast infection is itching in the vaginal or vulvar area. Other symptoms of vaginal yeast infection and vulvitis include:

soreness burning, pain during urination and intercourse. vaginal discharge.

Vulvitis can also cause local pain in addition to the above symptoms. Pain in the vulvar area is referred to as vulcanized.

In up to 5% of women, yeast vulvovaginitis may cause a recurrent problem. A recurrent yeast infection occurs when a woman has four or more infections in one year that are not related to antibiotic use. Recurrent yeast infections may be related to an underlying medical condition and may require more aggressive treatment.

Diagnosis and Categorisation

Vaginal yeast infection is suggested when a cheesy white discharge is noted over the walls of the vagina, but the symptoms of vaginal yeast infection are nonspecific and may be a result of other conditions. To firmly establish the diagnosis and to rule out any other causes of the symptoms, your doctor may take a specimen scraped from the affected area for microscopic analysis or for culture in the laboratory. Identification of yeast under a microscope, when possible, is the least expensive and most rapid and accurate way to establish the diagnosis.

Vaginal yeast infection and vulvitis may be treated with antifungal medications that are applied topically in and around the vagina or with antifungal medications taken by mouth. Sometimes, mixed infections with more than one microbe can require combinations of treatments.

Topically applied antifungal creams include:

butoconazole (Femstat 3), clotrimazole (Lotrimin), miconazole (Monistat), and terconazole (Terazol 3).
